Museum of Sculptures
Landshut, medieval residence of the Bavarian dukes and nowadays capital of Lower Bavaria, has always seen great sculptors within its walls. The tradition commences with Hans Leinberger, who saw the end of the middle ages and the rise of Early Modern Europe, it continues with Christian Jorhan, the Elder, and lastly there is Prof. Fritz Koenig, one of the most renowned sculptors of the Modern. His works can be seen worldwide in public places and in the collections of renowned museums. From 1968 to 1971 he formed the central fountain of the World Trade Center Plaza.
The City of Landshut received his life’s work as an artist and his high ranking art collections in the form of a foundation. In return, the city has built a remarkable edifice in accordance with the sculptor’s intentions. It is remarkable since it is invisible. Because of the building being embedded in the city’s topography under the Trausnitz Castle on the top of the hill, between the Gothic churches of St. Martin and St. Jodok, the museum does not claim an outward appearance of its own. It is situated beyond the historical city wall and beneath the wood-covered surface of the Hofberg.
The inside is characterized by a contrast between the cold technoid exposed concrete and the ‘natural’ texture of the ancient brick wall. A meandering ground plan guides the visitor from room to room. The floor is made up of granite, which unites and stresses the primary role of the room as opposed to the wall’s surfaces. This brings the three dimensional quality of the exhibits to life.
The inaugural exhibition displayed the retrospective "Fritz Koenig. Skulptur und Zeichnung 1942-1997", which consisted of exemplary sculptures and drawings by the artist ranging from wartime workings till the present day. This exposition was a fine example of how the presentation of the sculptures can blend in with the surrounding architecture: the architectural idea as well as the exhibits come from the sculptor himself.
With their common project, the Museum of Sculptures, the city of Landshut and the Foundation Fritz and Maria Koenig have created a meeting place for sculptural works of various cultures and ages.
Fritz Koenig. Exhibition 2008
Celebrating the first decade of the Hofberg Sculpture Museum, a special exhibition provides an overview of the entire sculptural and graphical oeuvre of Fritz Koenig, born 1924.
The objects d’art included in the exhibition provide an extensive overview of the major themes that Koenig has worked on in the last sixty years: The depiction of the frailty of human existence torn between love, death and the knowledge of the transitory nature of himself and everything around him.
Another focus are the works created for public spaces, starting with the "Pietà" (1962) in Berlin-Plötzensee, comprising the "The Sphere" (1968-1971), that used to stand on the plaza of World Trade Center, and including the model for the Holocaust memorial (1994) in Berlin. These works allow the visitor to experience the international development of sculptural art by enjoying the opus of Fritz Koenig.
The exhibition has been designed by the artist himself.
Guided tours last about an hour and leave room for interaction with and about individual pieces of art.
