677. Landshut Bartholomew Fair

19th - 28th August 2016

The town of Landshut hosts two fairs each year: one in autumn, also known as the Bartholomew Fair and one in spring. In both visitors have a chance to browse market stalls as well as have fun with games and rides.
The Bartholomew Fair is a festival with a long tradition. It has been celebrated annually inlate summer since 1339. Its name comes from the time of year in which it was originally held: around St Bartholomews day on 24th August.
The origins of the festival come from the establishment of the area of Landshut known as the Freyung in 1338. The Bavarian Duke Heinrich XIV gave permission for an annual fair to be held here in order to encourage trade in the new area.
The Bartholomew Fair has changed its location many times in order to accommodate a growing number of stands. From theFreyung to the Regierungsplatz and from there to the Neustadtand then the fairground on the Niedermayerstrasse. In 1949 the rides were set up for the first time in front of the town gates on the Grieserwiese, in 1979 they were joined by the rest of the market.
Less is known about the Spring Fair, previously known as “Bruderkirchweihdult". It is assumed that it was established in the 14th century in connection with the dedication of the Dominican Church in 1386.
