Work on Landshut's parish and collegiate church was begun by the master
builder Hans Krumenauer in 1385 and concluded in 1500 with the
considerable involvement of Hans von Burghausen. With its unusual
proportions, which are extended in the vertical, and its combination of
the high and late Gothic styles, the church is one of the most
significant Gothic buildings in south Germany. At 130.6 m the tower is
the tallest brick tower in the world (source: wikipedia). Opening times: April - September: 7.30 a.m. - 6.30 p.m. October - March: 7.30 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. Monday/Friday closed from 10.30 a.m. until 3.00 p.m.! Groups by arrangement

in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria, known as the “Kehlheimer". In the
late Middle Ages, between 1255 and 1503, when Bavaria was divided into
many separate dukedoms, Landshut became the central point of Lower
Bavaria. As the seat of the Lower Bavarian dukes the castle gained
considerably in significance. After the end of the Middle Ages, the
castle enjoyed its heyday as the court of the Bavarian crown princes,
particularly during the time of crown prince Wilhelm from 1568 to 1579.

in Germany. It is a monumental symbol of the duke's role in the
city. With the death of Georg the Rich in 1503 the male line of the
Landshutbranch of the ruling Wittelsbacher family came to an end and the
town was plunged into a war of succession. As aresult, Landshut lost
its position as ducal seat and power passed to the family's Munich line:
to Duke Albrecht and after his death to his oldest son Wilhelm IV.
However, Wilhelm's younger brother Ludwig was to restore Landshut to
some of its old importance: he successfully challenged the primogeniture
law of 1506, which dictated that the kingdom could not be divided and
that power must pass solely to the oldest male heir. Ludwig argued that
asthe law was passed after his birth, it could not apply to him. He was
awarded the right to co-govern and consequently established himself in
1516 in Landshut and remained responsible for the Bavarianlowlands until
his death in 1545.

Since medieval times the first floor of the central building has been
dominated by the magnificent Ceremonial Room. During the Landshuter
Hochzeit of 1475 (the wedding of Hedwig, the Polish princess and Duke
Georg the Rich) the room was used for the wedding dance and it was here
that the noble ladies leaned out of the windows to watch the tournament
held in the Altstadt below. 400 years later the town authorities
commissioned the famous architect Georg Hauberrisser to remodel the room
in a neo-Gothic style.
The room hecreated is one of the most impressive examples of the
decorative artwork of the late 19th Century. The necessary monies were
authorised by the fairy tale monarch himself, King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
The massive wooden architecture of the ceiling reaches up into the
attic of the house, revealing the steep slant of the roof. The ceiling
is decorated with the coats of arms of important families. Carved faces
projecting out into the room remind of the gargoyles on Gothic
cathedrals. The wooden pillars supporting the rear balcony are also
decorated with coats of arms. The mighty bronze chandelier and the
elaborately tiled fireplace, a fine example of Landshut's pottery
tradition, both add to the splendid atmosphere. Even the wooden
panelling and the door fittings form part of the work of art as a whole.
And all this before the visitor has properly admired the real wonder of the room: the paintings around the walls. Opening times: Monday - Friday: 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. - or by arrangement
